#Misconception One: Grace is a License to sin
A misconception can be defined as a mistaken thought, idea or notion; a misunderstanding. There are so many misconceptions about Grace and I have decided to address some of the most common ones in these series. These won’t be in any way exhaustive but would at least set us on the path of balanced truth.
This misconception is the most common and over time has become well used basically because many have been told what Grace is not and have never bothered to do a careful study of Grace on their own. We need to seriously apply Paul’s advice in 2 Timothy 2:15 to our lives.
Grace is not a license to sin but the divine empowerment to live above sin. The Bible teaches us in Romans 6:14 that Grace is what gives us dominion over sin. It suffices to say that Grace is not given to us to sin; it is given to us not to sin.
From John 1:16-17 we also learn that Grace is not a teaching, a doctrine or an ideology. Grace is much more than that; Grace is a Person and His name is called Jesus Christ. Grace said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world.” We all know that light represents something good, virtuous and profitable.
We as believers are just like Jesus and that’s why He also called us the light of the world in Matthew 5:14-16. As the light of the world therefore, we have been given grace to show forth good works which will in turn glorify God. Grace is not for sinful works; it is for good works. Grace is given to glorify God.
